Navigating cultural expectations in relationships as a Garo individual

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of navigating the complex waters of cultural expectations in our relationships as Garo individuals. Whether it’s the pressure to uphold traditions or the weight of family expectations, it can feel overwhelming at times. We want to honor our heritage, but we also want to carve out our own paths — and sometimes those two things seem at odds. One thing that really helped me was finding others in our community who are going through similar experiences. Sharing our stories made me realize that many of us face the same expectations, whether it’s about choosing a partner, family roles, or even how to celebrate our cultural events. By connecting with someone who understands what it means to balance these cultural pressures, I felt less alone. We even started meeting regularly to share our thoughts and strategies, which transformed my perspective on these challenges. Another approach some of us try is being open about our feelings with our families. While it can be daunting, expressing our struggles with cultural expectations can foster understanding. For example, I had a heart-to-heart with my parents about how I want to celebrate our traditions while also incorporating my own ideas. It wasn’t easy, but it opened up a dialogue that made it possible for them to see my side. We also might find it helpful to set personal boundaries that respect our cultural values while allowing space for our individuality. It’s not about rejecting our culture but finding a way to blend it into our lives in a way that feels authentic. This might mean choosing which traditions we want to embrace fully and which ones we can adapt or even skip. The journey is not always smooth, and there might be times we feel the weight of expectation pressing down hard. But finding even one person who understands this struggle can make a world of difference. Anyone else feeling caught between tradition and personal choice? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you navigate this.
