How do you handle conversations about food when you're at gatherings and everyone else seems to have more than enough?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever found yourself at a gathering where everyone around you seems to have PLENTY of food, while you’re just hoping to find something that fits your situation? It can feel really isolating, and many of us know that tightness in our chests when we’re navigating these conversations about food. One thing that has helped me is being honest—when someone asks if I want something to eat, I try to share a bit about my experience with food insecurity. It can feel vulnerable, but many times, I’ve found that people respond with kindness and understanding. They might offer to share what they have or even make suggestions based on what they notice. It’s amazing how opening up can create a bridge, even if it feels scary at first. Another approach some of us take is to focus on the social aspect of gatherings rather than the food itself. You might find it helpful to engage in conversations about things other than what’s on the table. Ask people about their favorite recipes or how they navigate their own food challenges. This way, you’re building connections while subtly shifting the focus away from food. Many of us have had more meaningful conversations when we connect over shared experiences rather than just what’s served on a plate. If you’re worried about what to say when the topic of food comes up, it can help to prepare a few responses ahead of time. For instance, you might say something like, “I appreciate the offer, but I’m trying to be mindful of what I eat right now.” This can help set boundaries without drawing too much attention to your situation. Plus, having even one person who understands your experience can make a huge difference in how you navigate these gatherings. Anyone else dealing with this during gatherings? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s worked for you. Sometimes just knowing that we’re not alone in this can lighten the load a bit.
