Has anyone else experienced judgment or stigma from others about their food situation?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the sting of judgment when it comes to our food situation. Whether it's the look from someone when we mention that we rely on food banks or the uncomfortable questions about why we can’t just budget better, these moments can be isolating. It’s tough to deal with the stigma surrounding food insecurity, especially when it feels like everyone has an opinion about our choices or situation. One thing that really helped me was finding community members who understand this struggle. I started chatting with a few people nearby who share similar experiences, and we’ve built a small support group. Just talking about the judgment we face made me feel less alone. It’s comforting to know that others have been through the same awkward conversations or felt the weight of assumptions about our circumstances. Another approach some of us try is being open about our experiences when we feel safe to do so. This doesn’t mean sharing everything with everyone, but if you have a friend or family member who seems open-minded, it can be helpful to explain a bit about what food insecurity really looks like. Many of us have found that sharing our stories can shift the narrative and challenge some of the stigma we face. We also know that sometimes the judgment can come from within ourselves. It’s easy to internalize the negative thoughts we hear from others. Practicing self-compassion and reminding ourselves that our situation doesn’t define our worth can be a daily challenge, but it’s so important. Having someone to talk to about these feelings can make a world of difference. Anyone else dealing with this? Have you found ways to navigate the stigma or connect with others who get it? Sometimes just one real conversation about these experiences can change everything.
