How do you navigate family expectations while pursuing your degree?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations while pursuing a degree can feel like walking a tightrope, especially for many of us who are first-generation college students. There’s often this weight of hope and pride from our families that can be both motivating and overwhelming at the same time. We want to make them proud, but we also have our own dreams and challenges to consider. One thing that’s helped me is being open about my journey. Many of us might feel the pressure to excel, but sharing our struggles with family can sometimes lighten the load. When I sat down with my parents to explain the realities of college life — the late nights, the stress, and the uncertainty — it helped them understand that my path might look different from what they imagined. They began to see my struggles not as failures but as part of the learning process. Another approach that some of us find useful is setting boundaries. It’s easy to feel like we have to meet every expectation, but carving out time for ourselves is crucial. For example, I started designating specific hours for studying, but also for self-care. This way, when my family asks how I’m doing, I can share not just my academic progress, but also how I'm taking care of my mental health. Finding balance has been essential in managing their expectations while ensuring I’m not losing myself in the process. Connecting with other first-gen students has also been a game changer. Sharing experiences with peers who truly understand the unique pressures we face can be incredibly validating. I found a study group where everyone was juggling similar expectations, and just knowing that I wasn’t alone in this made a world of difference. We support each other through tough days and celebrate the small victories together. Anyone else navigating these family expectations? It really helps to talk about it with someone who gets it — what strategies have you found that work for you?
