Navigating family expectations while trying to fit into college life

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have felt that tug-of-war between the excitement of college life and the weight of family expectations. As first-generation college students, we often find ourselves balancing our own dreams with the hopes our families have for us. It can be overwhelming at times, right? One thing that helped me was setting aside time to communicate openly with my family about what college life really looks like. They might have a picture in their minds based on what they've heard or seen, but sharing my experiences—like the challenges of managing coursework, the pressure of grades, or even the social dynamics—can help them understand my journey better. Finding a way to connect those expectations with the reality of being a student has made a huge difference. Another approach some of us try is to set boundaries when it comes to family expectations. It’s okay to say, "I appreciate your hopes for me, but I need to explore my own path." This doesn’t mean we love our families any less; it just means we’re carving our own identities. Having even one person—whether it's a friend or a mentor—who understands this struggle can help us feel less isolated. I found a group of fellow first-gen students, and we often share our experiences and advice. It’s comforting to know I’m not alone in navigating these tricky waters. Sometimes, we might feel pressured to pursue certain majors or career paths that our families envision for us. It’s tough to break that cycle of expectation while trying to figure out who we are and what we want. Remember, it’s okay to explore different options and even change your mind along the way. Sharing these feelings with someone going through the same thing has been so validating for me. Anyone else feeling the push and pull of family expectations while trying to embrace college life? Would love to hear what’s worked for you or how you’re managing this balancing act!
