Feeling out of place in social settings with peers who have different backgrounds

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of walking into a room full of peers who seem to have a different background or life experience. As first-generation college students, it can sometimes feel like we’re navigating a whole different world compared to those who have family members who’ve been through this journey before. The pressure to fit in can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to feel out of place or like you’re somehow not measuring up. One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of fellow first-gen students to connect with. We started meeting weekly to share our experiences, whether it was the struggles of understanding financial aid, or simply feeling like we had to explain our backgrounds to others. Just having that safe space made it easier to voice our worries and celebrate our successes together. It reminded me that many of us are going through similar challenges, and that sense of community can be so comforting. Another approach some of us try is to seek out events or organizations on campus that celebrate diversity and inclusion. These spaces often feel more welcoming and can provide an opportunity to connect with others who understand the complexities of being a first-gen student. You might find that sharing your story and hearing others’ experiences can help bridge the gap and make those social settings feel less intimidating. It’s also okay to acknowledge when we feel out of place. Some days, it’s really hard to shake off that feeling of not belonging, especially during moments when it seems like everyone else has a support network or insider knowledge. But talking about these feelings with others who get it can be a huge relief. I found someone going through the same thing, and we started chatting regularly — it really changed my perspective on feeling isolated. Anyone else dealing with this? It would be great to hear your experiences and what’s helped you navigate those tricky social settings. Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands makes all the difference.
