Navigating social media after leaving the Amish—do you feel overwhelmed or liberated?

Leaving the Amish community can feel like stepping into a whole new world, can't it? Many of us have experienced that mix of overwhelming sensation and a strange feeling of liberation when we first dive into social media. It's like we're standing on the edge of a vast ocean, unsure whether to jump in or just dip our toes.
One thing that often helps is to take it slow. When we first leave, the sheer amount of information and different perspectives on social media can be dizzying. It might be helpful to curate our feeds intentionally—follow accounts that resonate with our experiences and avoid those that trigger feelings of guilt or confusion. Finding a few individuals who have made similar journeys can bring a sense of belonging amidst the chaos. I remember following one person who shared their own struggles and triumphs, and it made me feel less alone.
Another approach some of us take is to set boundaries. It’s easy to get lost in scrolling, especially when we’re trying to adjust to our new lives outside of the Amish community. We might decide to limit our time on certain platforms or designate specific times in our day for social media. This way, we can engage with it without feeling completely overwhelmed.
Many of us have found support in connecting with others who have left the Amish lifestyle, whether through online groups or local meetups. Sharing our experiences—like the challenges we face with social norms or the excitement of discovering new interests—can be incredibly liberating. Having even one person who truly understands this transition makes navigating social media feel a little less daunting. I found someone nearby who was also on this journey, and we started chatting regularly about our experiences. It changed everything for me.
Anyone else feeling this mix of overwhelm and liberation? It’s such a unique journey, and sometimes just sharing our stories can lighten the load. What has your experience been like with social media since leaving?
