Navigating relationships with family still in the Amish community — how do you handle the disconnect?

Many of us know the struggle of navigating relationships with family still in the Amish community after leaving. It can feel like there’s this huge chasm between our experiences and theirs. The disconnect can be painful, especially when you want to maintain those bonds but feel like you’re living in completely different worlds.
One thing that has helped me is finding common ground in our shared history. When I talk to my family, I try to bring up memories from our time together—like family gatherings or traditions we used to enjoy. It opens up a space for connection, even if it’s just for a moment. Many of us have found that reminiscing can remind them of the love we shared rather than just focusing on our differences.
Another approach some of us try is being transparent about our lives outside the community without pushing too hard. I’ve found that sharing small aspects of my life, like a new hobby or a funny story about an everyday experience, can pique their interest. It shows them I’m still the same person they once knew, just on a different path. This can sometimes lead to deeper conversations where they’re curious about our choices and experiences.
Sometimes, the hardest part is dealing with their concerns about our well-being. They love us and want the best, but their ideas about what that means can be so different from our reality. It can help to acknowledge their worries openly and reassure them that we’re okay, even if we’re not living life the way they envisioned.
One thing that really helped me was connecting with others who have walked this path. Finding a few people who understand the unique challenges of having family still in the Amish community made such a difference. We share our experiences and support one another, which makes the tough conversations with our families feel a little less daunting.
Anyone else navigating this tricky territory? I’d love to hear how you handle the disconnect and what has helped you maintain those family ties.
