Finding your identity outside of the Amish culture — what has that journey looked like for you?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of standing at the crossroads of our identities, especially after leaving the Amish community. It’s both liberating and daunting to explore who we are outside of the traditions and values we grew up with. Often, it feels like we’re shedding a skin that was both protective and limiting. One thing that really helped me was diving into new experiences that felt completely foreign, like trying out different hobbies or joining groups that weren’t rooted in my past. I remember the first time I attended a local art class — I was nervous, feeling like an outsider. But I ended up connecting with others who were also figuring out their paths, and it made me feel less alone. Many of us might find that exploring our passions can open doors to new friendships and a sense of belonging in a world that feels so different. Another approach that has been transformative for some of us is reconnecting with our values but in ways that resonate with who we are now. For example, I’ve found solace in volunteering for causes I care about, which has helped me redefine my sense of purpose. It’s a way to contribute to the community while also connecting with others who share similar beliefs and experiences. Finding even one person who understands the journey from the Amish lifestyle can provide a unique comfort, reminding us that we’re not alone in this transition. Of course, it’s not always easy. There are days when the weight of our past feels heavy, and we might grapple with feelings of guilt or confusion about our choices. Many of us have had to navigate the complexities of relationships with family members who may not understand our new lives. That’s why having someone to talk to — whether it’s a friend from the outside world or someone else who’s walked this path — can make all the difference. So, how has your journey been in finding your identity outside of the Amish culture? Anyone else feeling the highs and lows of this transition? Sharing our stories can help us see we’re not alone in this complex and beautiful journey.
