How do you handle social events where food is a central focus?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Social events where food takes center stage can feel overwhelming for many of us in recovery from an eating disorder. Whether it’s a birthday party, a family gathering, or a casual get-together with friends, the focus on food often brings up a mix of anxiety, pressure, and old habits. We’re not alone in this struggle, and sharing our experiences can really help. One thing that has helped me is being honest with myself about my feelings before heading into these situations. It’s okay to acknowledge the anxiety or discomfort—many of us feel that way too. I like to take a moment to breathe, remind myself of my progress, and set an intention for the event. For instance, I might decide to focus on connecting with others rather than fixating on the food. It’s a small shift, but it changes how I approach the gathering. Another strategy that’s worked for many of us is to bring a safe snack or drink. This way, we have something familiar to rely on if we start feeling overwhelmed. Plus, it opens up opportunities to connect with others who might be feeling the same way. I remember bringing my favorite sparkling water to a friend’s party, and it sparked a conversation with someone else who also felt anxious about the food. Finding even one person who understands can make a world of difference. Setting boundaries is crucial, too. We can practice saying no to questions about our eating habits or sharing our struggles if we’re not ready. Many of us have found that it’s okay to excuse ourselves for a moment if things get too intense. Stepping outside for fresh air or finding a quiet corner can help us regroup. What’s important is that we remember we don’t have to navigate these events alone. Sharing our feelings and experiences can build connections that help us through the tough moments. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear how you handle social events and what’s worked for you.
