Navigating social events where food is the focus — how do you cope?

Navigating social events where food is the focus can be really challenging for many of us in recovery from eating disorders. It can feel like walking a tightrope between wanting to engage and feeling overwhelmed by the food surrounding us. Those moments when everyone is gathering around a buffet or dessert table can trigger a whirlwind of emotions, and it’s okay to acknowledge that.
One thing that’s helped me is preparing beforehand. If I know there’s a gathering coming up, I try to think through what I might feel comfortable eating or even consider bringing my own dish. Having something I enjoy—and that aligns with my recovery goals—can make me feel more at ease. It’s a way to take control of the situation without drawing too much attention to myself. And if the event allows, sharing my dish can also be a conversation starter, which helps me feel more connected to others.
Another approach some of us find helpful is setting boundaries for ourselves. This might mean giving ourselves permission to skip certain foods or even the whole meal if it feels too much. It’s okay to step away for a moment, breathe, and check in with ourselves. Sometimes, having a buddy system helps too. I found someone who understands my struggles, and we often go to events together. Just knowing there’s someone there who gets it can ease the anxiety. We can support each other in moments when the pressure feels intense.
It’s also important to remember that we’re not alone in this. Many of us experience similar feelings at social events. Leaning into those connections, whether it’s through conversations, texts, or even sharing our stories here, can really help remind us that we’re part of a community that understands.
Anyone else feeling the pressure of food-focused social events? I’d love to hear your experiences and what strategies you use to cope. Sometimes, just having one conversation with someone who really gets it can make all the difference.
