Navigating social events and food-related situations — any tips or strategies that have helped you?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating social events and food-related situations can be really overwhelming for many of us in recovery. It’s like we’re walking a tightrope between wanting to connect and feeling the weight of anxiety and triggers. It’s okay to feel this way — many of us experience this struggle. One thing that has helped me is being open with a trusted friend or family member about my journey. If I know I’ll be at a social gathering, I sometimes share my concerns with someone attending. Just having that person who understands can make a world of difference. They can help steer conversations away from food or discreetly check in on me throughout the event. It’s comforting to know that I have someone in my corner who gets it. Another approach we often find useful is preparing a small “safe snack” to bring along. It’s not about hiding or avoiding the food at the event; it’s more about creating a sense of safety. Having something familiar on hand can ease the tension when everyone else is indulging. Plus, it gives you something to focus on if the conversation turns toward food, allowing you to steer it back to something more comfortable. Setting boundaries is also crucial. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s completely okay to step outside for a breather or to leave early if things get too intense. Many of us have learned that it’s not about how long we stay but about our mental well-being. Finding others who share similar experiences can help too. I connected with someone in recovery at a support group, and we started attending social events together. Just knowing I wasn’t alone made tough situations feel a little more manageable. Sometimes, the isolation can be the hardest part, but sharing those moments with someone who understands can lighten the load. Anyone else feeling the pressure of social events? What strategies have you found that help? Sharing our experiences can truly make a difference, and I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
