How do you handle situations where people assume you're bad with money just because of your dyscalculia?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us with dyscalculia have faced the frustrating experience of people jumping to conclusions about our money management skills. It’s like a knee-jerk reaction—someone hears “dyscalculia” and suddenly assumes we can’t handle budgeting or basic math. It’s disheartening and can feel really isolating. One thing that has helped me is being open about my experiences when I feel comfortable. Sometimes, I’ve found that sharing specific examples of how I manage my finances—like using apps that help me track spending or setting up automatic payments—can shift the conversation. It shows that while numbers are a challenge, I’m proactive about finding solutions that work for me. When I explained to a friend how I use color-coded charts to visualize my budget, it really opened up a dialogue, and they started to understand my approach better. Another approach some of us try is to educate those around us about dyscalculia. It can feel daunting, but when I take the time to explain what it means for me, including my strengths and strategies, it often leads to more supportive interactions. For instance, I’ve had conversations with family members where I explain that, even though I struggle with certain numbers, I excel in planning and organization. It helps them see me as a whole person rather than just my dyscalculia. Connecting with others who understand these challenges has also made a huge difference. I found someone nearby who is also navigating similar assumptions about money management, and we started meeting up for coffee. Just being able to share our experiences and strategies has made me feel less alone in this journey. If you're comfortable, finding even one person who gets it can change how you approach these conversations. Anyone else dealing with this? It’s such a common struggle, and sometimes just talking to someone who understands can make all the difference. What strategies have you found helpful when others assume your dyscalculia means you can’t handle money?
