Many of us have experienced those moments when we walk into a place or see someone from our past and it feels like a wave of memories crashes over us. It can be triggering, and suddenly, we’re back in a headspace we’ve worked so hard to move away from. It’s tough, and we all know that feeling of vulnerability that comes with it.
One thing that really helps is having a plan for those moments. When I feel a trigger coming on, I try to ground myself by focusing on my breathing. Taking just a few deep breaths can help create a little space between the past and the present. Sometimes, I’ll even carry a small object in my pocket that reminds me of the progress I've made—like a smooth stone or a bracelet. It’s a simple reminder that I’m not that person anymore.
Another approach that many of us find useful is talking about our triggers with someone who understands. Having even one person in your life who truly gets what you’ve been through makes a huge difference. When I was facing a tough situation, I connected with someone from recovery meetings, and we started sharing our experiences regularly. Just knowing that I wasn’t alone in those feelings helped me feel less overwhelmed.
It’s also okay to set boundaries. If you know certain places or people are likely to trigger you, it’s perfectly valid to choose not to engage with them, at least for a while. This journey is about putting your well-being first, and sometimes that means taking a step back to protect yourself.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands can change everything. What strategies have you found helpful when triggers arise?
