How do you cope with cravings in social situations where substance use is present?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have been in that tough spot: surrounded by friends or family enjoying drinks, and suddenly, those cravings hit hard. It can feel like the walls are closing in, and it’s easy to feel like we’re the odd one out. The pressure in social situations can be overwhelming, but there are ways to navigate these moments while staying true to our recovery journey. One thing that really helped me was preparing a few strategies ahead of time. If I know I’m going to an event where substance use will be present, I’ll bring my own non-alcoholic drinks. Having something in hand that I enjoy, like sparkling water with a splash of juice, gives me a sense of control and makes it easier to avoid feeling left out. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter if someone asks what I’m sipping on! Another approach some of us try is having a buddy system. If you can, connect with someone who understands what you’re going through, even if it’s just through a quick text or call. I found a friend who’s also in recovery, and we check in with each other during social events. Just knowing someone else gets it can ease that pressure and help us both feel supported. It’s also important to have an exit plan. If you start feeling overwhelmed or those cravings become too much, it’s okay to step outside or leave early. I’ve learned that prioritizing my mental health is key, and sometimes that means giving myself permission to walk away from a situation that doesn’t feel safe anymore. Lastly, try to focus on the people around you rather than the substances. Engaging in conversations, playing games, or even just enjoying the atmosphere can help distract from the cravings. It’s all about shifting our focus and reminding ourselves why we’re choosing recovery in the first place. Anyone else dealing with this in social settings? It can feel isolating, but sharing our experiences can really help. What’s worked for you when cravings hit in these situations?
