Navigating family expectations during festivals and rituals — how do you find your own balance?

Festivals and rituals in our Deshastha Brahmin community can bring so much joy, but they also come with a load of expectations that can feel overwhelming. Many of us know that tug-of-war between honoring our traditions and carving out our own paths. It can be tough to balance what our families expect and what we personally want to celebrate or participate in.
One thing that has helped me navigate this tricky space is starting small. If you feel pressured to participate in every ritual or festival event, you might want to pick one or two that resonate with you the most. By focusing on what truly feels meaningful, you can dedicate your energy to those moments without feeling stretched too thin. For instance, you might find joy in the simplicity of preparing a favorite dish for a festival rather than committing to a full day of ceremonies.
Another approach some of us try is having open conversations with our family. It can be nerve-wracking, but sharing our feelings about certain rituals can lead to more understanding. When I spoke to my parents about how I sometimes feel disconnected from certain traditions, it opened the door for them to share their own experiences too. You might be surprised to find that they have their own struggles with expectations, and discussing it can help create a more supportive environment where everyone feels heard.
Connecting with others from our community who share similar experiences has also been a game-changer. I found someone who feels the same way about managing family expectations, and we started chatting more regularly. It’s comforting to know that we’re not alone in this, and just having someone who truly understands can make those festival pressures feel a little lighter.
Navigating family expectations during festivals can be a balancing act, but we can find our own way to celebrate while still honoring our roots. Anyone else feeling this push and pull during the festival season? I’d love to hear what strategies you've found helpful!
