Navigating the uncertainty of our status as DACA recipients while trying to plan for the future can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us share that constant weight of uncertainty—wondering if our work permits will be renewed, or what will happen if DACA changes again. It can make thinking about long-term goals feel overwhelming and sometimes even hopeless.
One thing that’s helped me is breaking down my goals into smaller, more manageable steps. Instead of thinking about where I want to be in five years, I focus on what I can do this month or even this week. For example, I might set a goal to network with one new person in my field or to research a potential internship. This way, I feel like I’m actively working toward my future, even when so much feels out of my control.
Many of us have also found solidarity in connecting with others who are in similar situations. Talking to someone who understands the unique challenges of being a DACA recipient can bring a sense of relief. I found a couple of people in my community who are also navigating the uncertainty, and we started meeting regularly to share updates on our situations and support each other. Just knowing that we’re not alone in this fight makes a world of difference.
Another approach some of us take is to stay informed about policy changes. It can be exhausting, but having a grasp on what’s happening legally can help us feel a bit more empowered. Joining local advocacy groups or online forums can also provide not just information, but a network of people who can offer guidance and support.
The uncertainty is tough, but finding even one person who gets it can really change our perspective. So, anyone else feeling the weight of planning for the future while dealing with this status? What has helped you navigate through the uncertainty? Sharing our experiences might just lead us to some hopeful connections!
