Navigating friendships when I can't be my true self around them

Many of us know that feeling of spending time with friends and not being able to show our true selves. It’s like wearing a mask that feels heavy, right? The moment you want to share something genuine about who you are—and the parts of you that are often hidden—it can feel like there’s a chasm between you and your friends.
One thing that has helped me navigate these friendships is finding small ways to express my true self, even if it’s just a little bit at a time. For instance, I might mention a book or a show that resonates with my experiences or subtly drop in a thought that reflects my identity. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it feels daunting to take that leap, but those little moments can pave the way for deeper connections.
Another approach I’ve tried is seeking out at least one friend who I feel I can trust with more of my story. Having even one person in your life who truly understands can make a world of difference. I found someone who was also navigating similar feelings, and we started talking more openly. Knowing I wasn’t alone in my struggles allowed me to slowly peel back those layers of my identity without fear of judgment.
It’s also important to acknowledge that not all friendships will be able to accommodate our true selves. Sometimes, we have to accept that certain friends may not be ready to understand or support us fully. This can be really painful, but remembering that it’s okay to seek out connections that feel more genuine can help ease that disappointment.
Anyone else dealing with this? What’s helped you find ways to connect with friends while still protecting your true self? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything.
