Navigating friendships when you're not out — do you feel like you're being fake?

Many of us know the struggle of navigating friendships while still in the closet. It can feel like walking a tightrope, trying to balance being yourself with the pressure of not being fully out. Sometimes, it feels like we’re wearing a mask, and that can leave us feeling fake or disconnected from the people we care about.
One thing that helped me was finding small ways to express my true self without coming out completely. For instance, I started sharing music or movies that resonate with my experiences, which opened up great conversations. It felt like a safe way to let my friends in on a part of me without having to dive into the big reveal just yet. You might find that doing this can help you feel a little less like you’re hiding.
Another approach some of us try is building deeper connections with those we trust. Having even one person in your life who gets it can make a huge difference. I found someone who was also navigating their own identity, and we started talking regularly. Just knowing that I wasn’t alone made the hard days feel a bit lighter. If you don’t have that person yet, reach out within our community — sometimes just sharing a little of your story can lead to unexpected friendships.
It’s also totally normal to feel conflicted about being authentic while still in the closet. We might worry about being seen as ‘fake,’ but it’s important to remember that our experiences are valid, no matter where we are on our journey. We’re all figuring this out together, and it’s okay to take your time.
So, how do you navigate friendships when you’re still figuring things out? Anyone else feeling the weight of being in the closet while trying to connect? Would love to hear what’s helped you.
