Many of us know that the scars of bullying can linger long into adulthood, often showing up in our relationships when we least expect it. Whether it's feeling unworthy of love, struggling with trust, or becoming overly cautious in new friendships, these effects can be tough to navigate.
One thing that has helped me is recognizing these patterns when they arise. For instance, if I catch myself pulling away from someone who genuinely wants to connect, I remind myself that it's okay to feel vulnerable. Acknowledging our feelings is the first step toward healing, and it can be liberating to admit when old wounds resurface.
Another approach some of us find helpful is to take things slow. Building trust doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s perfectly fine to set boundaries as we explore new connections. I found that sharing my experiences with someone who understands the impact of bullying made a world of difference. Having even one person in our lives who truly gets it can make those tough days a bit easier. We started meeting up to talk about our experiences, and it really helped me reshape how I view my worth in friendships.
It’s also important to practice self-compassion. We might not always feel like we deserve kindness, but treating ourselves with the same care we wish to receive from others is crucial. Simple acts like journaling our thoughts or engaging in self-care routines can serve as reminders that we are worthy of healthy connections and love.
Anyone else navigating the aftermath of bullying in your adult relationships? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands changes everything. I’d love to hear what’s helped you!
