How do you cope with triggers that remind you of your bullying experiences?

Many of us know how it feels when a random comment or situation suddenly pulls us back to those painful moments of bullying. It can be jarring and leave us feeling vulnerable all over again. We might find ourselves in a crowded room and hear laughter that reminds us of our past, or we see someone who looks like a former bully. It’s tough, and the feelings can be overwhelming.
One thing that has helped me when triggers pop up is grounding techniques. I try to focus on my surroundings—instead of letting my mind spiral into the past, I might concentrate on what I can see, hear, or touch in the moment. For example, if I’m in a triggering situation, I’ll take a few deep breaths and notice the colors around me or the texture of something in my pocket. It’s not easy, but it helps to anchor myself back in the present.
Another approach that many of us have found useful is talking it out with someone who understands. Sharing those triggered feelings with a fellow survivor can lighten the load. I remember one time I reached out to someone from this community after a tough day. Just talking about how the trigger affected me helped me to feel less alone and more validated. It’s like we share this secret language and can really support each other in ways that others might not get.
Journaling can also be a powerful tool. Writing down our thoughts and feelings when we experience triggers can help us process what happened. It can be cathartic to see those feelings on paper, and sometimes we can even spot patterns or specific triggers that we didn’t realize were affecting us. Plus, it can be a safe space to explore what we wish we could say to those who hurt us, without any judgment.
The road of healing from bullying is not a straight line, and we’re all navigating it in our own way. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear your experiences and what has worked for you when those triggers arise. Sometimes, just knowing we’re not alone makes all the difference.
