Feeling isolated during holidays that are not recognized by those around you—how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
The holiday season can be a tough time for many of us in the Baha'i community, especially when our celebrations might go unnoticed or unrecognized by those around us. It can feel isolating to be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of holidays that don’t resonate with us. Many of us experience that disconnect, and it’s okay to acknowledge that it’s hard. One thing that has helped me navigate this feeling of isolation is creating our own traditions, even if they’re small. For example, I’ve started setting aside time to reflect on the significance of our holy days in a personal way, like journaling or lighting a candle. These small rituals help me reconnect with the beauty of our faith and remind me that my beliefs are valid and important. Another approach some of us try is reaching out to fellow Baha'is, even if it's just through group chats or social media. I found a couple of friends who also feel this way, and we began sharing our plans for the holidays. Just knowing there are others out there who understand made a world of difference. Sometimes we even meet online to celebrate together, which helps lessen that sense of isolation. It can also be helpful to be open about our experiences with those close to us. If you feel comfortable, sharing what the Baha'i holidays mean to you can lead to more understanding and support. I’ve found that when I explain the significance of our celebrations, it opens up a dialogue that helps bridge the gap between our experiences and those of others. Anyone else feeling this disconnect during the holidays? I’d love to hear how you cope or any unique traditions you’ve created to feel more connected. Sometimes just sharing our stories with each other can light up the season in ways we didn’t expect.
