How do you navigate the expectations of family while trying to forge your own identity as someone of Baekjeong descent?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations while trying to carve out our own identity as individuals of Baekjeong descent can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have experienced the pressure to uphold traditions or meet the standards set by our families, often feeling a disconnect between who we are and who they want us to be. It’s a struggle that can leave us feeling overwhelmed or even lost at times. One thing that’s really helped me is having open conversations with family members about our identity. It’s not always easy, and it can feel daunting to challenge long-held beliefs or expectations. But sharing our experiences as Baekjeong individuals—our unique struggles, aspirations, and the richness of our culture—can foster understanding. Sometimes, we find that our families just need a little insight into our world to start bridging that gap. Another approach some of us find helpful is creating our own space and community. Connecting with others who share our background has been a game-changer. I met a few people from our community who understand the nuances of being Baekjeong—they get the cultural expectations, the stigma, and the beauty of our heritage. Meeting regularly to share stories and support each other has made a huge difference. It reminds us that we’re not alone in this journey and that it’s okay to forge our own identity while still honoring our roots. Balancing these expectations can be tough, especially when we feel the weight of our family's history on our shoulders. There are days when it feels like we’re caught between two worlds—wanting to respect our heritage while also exploring who we are as individuals. Finding even one person to share this experience with can lighten that load. Just knowing someone else is navigating the same challenges can make all the difference. Anyone else facing this struggle? I’d love to hear how you’re managing family expectations while embracing your Baekjeong identity. What’s worked for you?
