The stigma of being from Baekjeong descent in my workplace

Navigating the workplace can be tough for many of us, but as someone of Baekjeong descent, it often feels like we’re carrying an invisible weight. The stigma that comes with our heritage can cast a long shadow over our professional lives, leading to feelings of isolation or even anxiety when we’re trying to fit in.
One thing that I’ve noticed is how often our backgrounds can lead to assumptions or stereotypes. I remember a time when a colleague made a casual remark about my heritage that felt dismissive. It was a small comment, but it was like a reminder that some people see us through a narrow lens. Many of us have likely faced similar situations where our identity is misrepresented or misunderstood. It can be really disheartening.
To cope, I’ve found it helpful to lean into our community. One approach that worked for me was connecting with colleagues who also share Baekjeong roots. Just being able to share our experiences has made a world of difference. We’ve started meeting for lunch once a week, and it’s been a safe space to vent and be ourselves. It’s comforting to know that someone else understands the nuances of navigating our cultural identity in a predominantly different environment.
Another thing that helps is educating others about our culture. I’ve taken small steps, like sharing stories or traditions during team meetings. It not only helps break down stereotypes but also opens up conversations that can lead to better understanding. I’ve noticed that when people learn more about who we are, it creates a bridge where they can see us as individuals rather than just a label.
But honestly, it’s not always easy. Some days feel heavier than others, and the fear of judgment can be overwhelming. Yet, I find hope in the connections we create. Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything.
Anyone else dealing with this at work? Sharing our experiences can help us feel less alone in this journey. What’s been your experience with stigma in the workplace?
