Many of us know the feeling of walking through life with a heavy weight on our shoulders, constantly fearing that we'll be "found out." As asylum seekers, we often navigate a world that doesn’t fully understand our journeys, and that fear can be overwhelming. It’s like wearing an invisible cloak that shields us from judgment but also makes us feel isolated.
One thing that’s really helped me is finding small, safe spaces where I can express my true self without the fear of being judged. This could be a local support group or even a casual meet-up with others who share our experiences. I remember the first time I spoke openly about my fears and challenges; there was such relief in knowing that I wasn’t alone. Many of us have shared similar stories, and just connecting with one or two people who understand what we’re going through can make a world of difference.
Another strategy I’ve found useful is practicing self-compassion. It’s easy to be hard on ourselves when we feel anxious about being discovered, but reminding ourselves that our feelings are valid can take the edge off. We might try journaling or meditating — even a few minutes of deep breathing can help ground us when the fear feels intense. And when we talk to others about these feelings, it often helps to hear that we’re not the only ones feeling this way.
Sometimes, it’s also about adjusting our expectations. It’s okay not to share everything about our lives with everyone. We can take our time, choosing the right moments and the right people to open up to. I’ve found that just having a couple of trusted friends who know my story makes it easier to navigate daily life without that constant fear.
Anyone else dealing with this? How do you manage that fear of being found out while going about your day? I’d love to hear what’s helped you through this challenging experience.
