How do you navigate conversations about relationships when people assume you're interested in sex?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating conversations about relationships can be a real minefield, especially when people jump straight to assumptions about sexual interest. Many of us in the asexual community have experienced that awkward moment when someone asks about our dating life and instantly assumes it’s all about sex. It can leave us feeling misunderstood and frustrated, right? One thing that really helped me was figuring out how to articulate my feelings in a way that feels comfortable for me. When someone asks about my relationship status, I try to frame my response around the emotional connections I value rather than focusing on the physical aspect. For example, I might say, “I’m more interested in building deep emotional bonds than anything sexual.” This can often shift the conversation and help people understand where I’m coming from, rather than jumping to conclusions. Another approach some of us find helpful is setting boundaries. If a friend brings up dating and seems fixated on sex, it can be helpful to gently redirect the conversation. I once had a close friend who kept pushing the topic; I finally said, “I appreciate that you want to talk about my love life, but I’m really not looking for that kind of relationship.” It was a bit uncomfortable at first, but it led to a deeper understanding between us. It’s also important to find those allies who get it. Connecting with even one person who understands asexuality can make conversations about relationships so much easier. I found someone in my local community who identifies similarly, and we meet up regularly to share our experiences. Just knowing someone else navigates these tricky waters too makes it feel less isolating. Anyone else grappling with these kinds of conversations? Sharing our experiences can really help us all feel a bit more understood. Would love to hear what you’ve tried!
