How do you navigate conversations about dating when people assume everyone is interested in sex?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating conversations about dating can feel like walking through a minefield, especially when the assumption is that everyone is interested in sex. Many of us in the asexual community have faced that awkward moment when someone brings up dating, and the immediate expectation is that it must involve physical intimacy. It can be exhausting, right? One thing that has helped me is being upfront about my feelings. When someone asks about my dating life, I often say something like, "I’m really more interested in emotional connections than physical ones." It’s a simple way to set the tone without going into a deep explanation every time. Many of us have found that being clear can sometimes lead to genuinely interesting conversations about what we value in relationships, which is often much deeper than just the physical aspect. Another approach we might consider is seeking out friends or potential partners who already understand or are curious about asexuality. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this can change everything. I found someone else in the community who feels the same way, and we started meeting regularly. Those conversations have not only helped me feel less isolated but have also made me more confident when talking to others about my dating preferences. It’s also worth remembering that not everyone will get it, and that’s okay. We might encounter people who respond with confusion or even dismissiveness. When that happens, it can help to remind ourselves that we’re not obligated to educate everyone. Protecting our energy is crucial, and sometimes it’s best to focus on the connections that feel right for us. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. How have you navigated those tricky dating discussions?
