How do you navigate social situations when anxiety hits unexpectedly?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that sinking feeling when anxiety hits out of nowhere, especially in social situations. You might be chatting with friends one moment and then suddenly feel like you can't breathe or your heart is racing. It's a tough spot to be in, and it can feel incredibly isolating, even when you're surrounded by people. One thing that’s helped me is having a simple escape plan in place before I get to any social event. This could be as easy as knowing where the nearest quiet space is or having a trusted friend you can text if you need a moment. Just knowing there’s a way to step away for a few minutes can provide a sense of control when everything starts feeling overwhelming. Another approach some of us find helpful is grounding techniques. You might try focusing on your breath or noticing the details around you—like the colors in the room or the sounds of conversation. It can pull you back into the present and help quiet some of that racing mind. Sharing these moments with someone who understands what you're going through can make a huge difference, too. I found someone in a similar boat, and we started meeting up before events. Just having a buddy who gets it made those initial moments way less daunting. It’s also important to remember that it’s okay to decline an invitation if you’re not feeling up to it. Many of us feel pressure to always be “on” or social, but honoring your own needs is crucial for managing anxiety. If you decide to go, sometimes just letting a friend know you might need a break can help them support you without judgment. Anyone else navigating these unexpected anxiety waves in social settings? It can really help to hear what you’ve tried and what’s worked for you.
