Navigating social situations when my ADHD makes me feel out of place

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us with ADHD know that social situations can sometimes feel like a maze — full of twists, turns, and unexpected dead ends. Whether it's a loud party or a quiet coffee shop, we can often feel out of place, overwhelmed by the sensory overload or the pressure to keep up with conversations. It’s tough, and sometimes it feels like we’re on a different wavelength than everyone else. One thing that has really helped me navigate these situations is preparing a few conversation starters ahead of time. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but having a couple of topics in my back pocket helps ease the anxiety of feeling lost in conversation. Whether it’s asking about someone’s favorite show or a recent trip they've taken, these little prompts can help keep the dialogue flowing. Plus, it gives me something to focus on rather than worrying about how I'm coming across. Another approach that’s made a difference is seeking out environments where I feel more comfortable. For instance, I tend to shy away from big gatherings and opt for smaller meet-ups instead. Recently, I connected with someone who also deals with ADHD, and we decided to meet for coffee at a quieter café. Just having that one person who gets it made the experience so much more enjoyable. We shared our quirks and strategies, which lightened the load of feeling out of place. Sometimes, the hardest part is the feeling of isolation that can creep in during social events. If you ever feel overwhelmed, it might help to take a short break. Stepping outside for some fresh air or finding a quieter corner can really help reset your mind. And if you can, try to find even one person to share that moment with — it can make a world of difference knowing you’re not alone in how you feel. Anyone else navigating these tricky social waters? What are your go-to strategies for feeling more at ease? Sharing what works might just help someone else who’s feeling out of place, too.
