The struggle of maintaining focus in social situations — does anyone else feel overwhelmed?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Do you ever find yourself in a social situation, surrounded by friends or family, and suddenly feel like your brain is juggling a million thoughts at once? Many of us with ADHD know that overwhelming feeling all too well. It's like trying to tune into a radio station but getting nothing but static and interference. One thing that often helps me is having a small strategy in place before heading into social gatherings. For example, I’ll set a goal of just one or two conversations I want to focus on. This way, I’m not trying to keep up with everyone at once. It’s also been comforting to find someone who understands the struggle — I've started chatting with a fellow community member before events, and just knowing that we're both navigating the same chaos makes a difference. That connection adds a layer of support that really helps ground me. Another approach some of us use is creating a little sensory toolkit. This might include things like fidget toys or even just a small piece of calming fabric to hold onto. These little items can help anchor our thoughts when it feels like everything is swirling around us. It’s a reminder that we’re allowed to take a moment to reset, and it can be a relief in the midst of a busy gathering. And let’s not forget about our own self-talk. Many of us can be our own worst critics, feeling like we should be able to handle social situations without a hitch. But it’s okay to admit that we might struggle more than others. Giving ourselves permission to feel overwhelmed can be freeing. Sometimes just acknowledging that it’s tough is the first step in coping with it. Anyone else dealing with the chaos of social interactions? I’d love to hear what strategies you’ve found that help you maintain focus and make those moments feel a bit easier. Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference!
