How do you cope with the pressure of being seen as "lazy" or "unmotivated" because of your ADHD?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us with ADHD know that feeling all too well — the pressure to be seen as "lazy" or "unmotivated" when we’re just trying to navigate our unique way of interacting with the world. It can be frustrating and isolating, especially when we’re working just as hard as anyone else, but our brains just don’t always cooperate in the same way. One thing that’s truly helped me is reframing how I view my productivity. Instead of measuring my worth by traditional standards, I’ve started to acknowledge the small wins. Whether it’s finally tackling that pile of laundry or just getting out of bed on a tough day, celebrating those moments helps to shift the focus from how much I’ve done to how far I’ve come. This perspective can be a game-changer, especially when the outside world might not see the effort we put in. Another approach that’s been valuable is creating a support network. Finding others who understand this struggle has made such a difference. I met someone in a similar situation, and we started checking in with each other regularly. Just having that one person who gets it has helped alleviate some of the pressure and combat that nagging sense of inadequacy. We share strategies and celebrate each other’s progress, no matter how small. It’s also important to give ourselves permission to take breaks. Many of us know that pushing through when our brains are saying "no" often leads to burnout, which only perpetuates that "lazy" label. Instead, allowing ourselves to step back and recharge can lead to better focus later on. I find that when I listen to my body and brain, I can often come back to tasks with a fresh perspective. The stigma around ADHD can feel overwhelming at times, but connecting with others who share these experiences can truly help ease that burden. Anyone else feeling this pressure? I’d love to hear how you cope and what strategies you’ve found helpful.
