Many of us with ADHD know that sinking feeling when we realize we’re not meeting expectations at work or school. The pressure can feel overwhelming, and guilt can creep in, making things even harder. It’s like we’re constantly battling against ourselves, and that can be really exhausting.
One thing that has helped me is breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps. When we look at a project as a whole, it can feel like climbing a mountain. But if we focus on just the next step, it becomes a lot less daunting. For example, instead of aiming to complete an entire report in one go, I set a timer for 25 minutes and just focus on writing one section. That way, I can celebrate little victories, which helps ease that guilt a bit.
Another approach is giving ourselves permission to be imperfect. Many of us wrestle with the idea of being “enough,” but embracing our unique way of processing things can be freeing. I’ve found that sharing my struggles with a coworker who understands ADHD has been a game-changer. We started a little accountability group, and just knowing I have someone in my corner makes it easier to cope with those feelings of guilt. It’s amazing how much lighter it feels when we’re not alone in this.
Also, prioritizing self-compassion can make a big difference. Instead of beating ourselves up for not hitting every deadline or not meeting expectations, we can remind ourselves that our brains work differently. It’s okay not to be perfect! Sometimes, just taking a moment to breathe and acknowledge that we’re doing our best can help shift our mindset.
Anyone else feeling this struggle? It really helps to talk to someone who understands — what’s been your experience with handling the guilt of unmet expectations?
