How do you handle the guilt of unfinished tasks when your ADHD makes it hard to focus?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of guilt when we look at our to-do lists and see unfinished tasks staring back at us, especially when ADHD makes it hard to focus. It can create this heavy weight on our shoulders, like we're not living up to expectations—either our own or those of others. It's tough, but I've found a few things that help ease that guilt a little. One thing that’s really helped me is shifting my mindset around what “finished” actually means. Instead of fixating on a task being completely done, I try to focus on making progress. If I can manage to spend just a few minutes on something, that’s a win in my book. Celebrating small victories, like sorting through emails or writing a single paragraph, helps remind us that we’re moving forward, even if it feels slow. Another approach that some of us find helpful is creating a more forgiving environment. If a task feels overwhelming, I break it down into bite-sized pieces. For instance, instead of telling myself I need to clean the entire house, I might set a timer for just 10 minutes to tidy one room. It’s amazing how that little time commitment can make starting feel less daunting. Plus, having even one person in your life who truly understands this struggle can make it easier to share those small victories. I’ve started checking in with a friend who also has ADHD, and we motivate each other to tackle our lists, even if it’s just a few things at a time. We also might find it helpful to embrace the fact that we are not alone in this. Many of us deal with similar feelings of guilt, and talking about it can lighten the load. I’ve found that sharing my experiences with others who get it can change everything. Just knowing someone else is in the same boat can make the unfinished tasks feel a little less heavy. How do you handle those feelings of guilt when your ADHD makes it hard to focus? It would be great to hear what's helped you, or if you’ve found ways to connect with others who understand this journey.
