We’ve all been there — that sinking feeling when you realize you missed an important date or commitment. For many of us navigating life with ADHD, the frustration can be intense, and it’s easy to feel like we’re letting others down or even letting ourselves down. But we’re not alone in this, and there are some ways we can tackle these moments together.
One thing that has really helped me is setting up multiple reminders. Just a simple phone alert isn’t always enough, especially when our minds wander. I’ve started using a combination of calendar apps and sticky notes around my space to keep important dates front and center. It might seem a bit excessive, but having those visual cues can make a big difference. I also try to set reminders a few days in advance, so I get that extra nudge before the day comes.
Another approach many of us find helpful is creating a routine around our commitments. If we can establish a set time each week to review what’s coming up — whether it’s over coffee or while we’re winding down for the night — it helps keep everything in check. I found that having someone to do this with has been a game-changer. Just having one person who understands can turn that review session into something a bit more enjoyable and less stressful.
It’s also worth noting that the feelings of guilt and frustration can be heavy. Sometimes, we might forget something important and spiral into self-criticism. When that happens, I remind myself that forgetting is part of our journey with ADHD. It doesn’t define our worth or our ability to show up for others. Sharing these experiences with someone who gets it can really help lighten that load, too.
Anyone else dealing with this? What strategies have you found that help you manage those frustrating moments? Sometimes, just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything.
