The emotional aftermath: what has surprised you about your feelings post-abortion?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have been through the emotional aftermath of an abortion, and it's a journey that can be surprisingly complex. It’s not just about the decision itself; it's everything that follows — the mix of relief, sadness, guilt, and sometimes even confusion. We might expect a clear-cut feeling after making such a significant choice, but for many of us, it’s a cocktail of emotions that can feel overwhelming. One thing that caught me off guard was the wave of sadness that hit me days or even weeks later. I thought I’d feel a sense of closure, but instead, I found myself reflecting on what could have been. It’s totally okay to have those feelings. Allowing ourselves to sit with them, even when it’s uncomfortable, can be a step toward understanding our own emotional landscape. Another thing that helped was finding a few people who had gone through similar experiences. Just being able to share those feelings openly with someone who understands can be a game-changer. I remember connecting with someone from this community, and we started checking in on each other. It created a safe space to talk about our emotional ups and downs. Having even one person who gets it can lighten the load. We might also find ourselves grappling with societal expectations. Sometimes, we feel pressure to react a certain way, and that can add to our emotional turmoil. It’s important to remind ourselves that our feelings are valid, no matter how they may differ from what others expect. Some of us might feel anger towards the circumstances that led us here, and that's perfectly normal too. So, what about you? What has surprised you about your feelings post-abortion? Sometimes, just sharing our stories with others who have been there can bring a sense of relief and understanding. Would love to hear what you've experienced.
