How do you navigate conversations about your experience with friends or family who may not understand?

Navigating conversations about our abortion experiences with friends or family can feel like walking on eggshells. Many of us know that not everyone will understand the complexities of our journey, and that can leave us feeling isolated or even misunderstood. It’s tough to share something so personal when we fear judgment or lack of empathy from those we love.
One thing that has helped me is starting with small, honest snippets about my feelings. Instead of diving into the entire experience right away, I’ve found that sharing how I felt during a specific moment can open the door for deeper conversations. For example, I might say, “I had a really hard time making that decision, and it felt overwhelming at first.” This invites questions without putting anyone on the defensive. It also gives them a chance to engage with my emotions rather than just the facts.
Another approach some of us try is to gauge the other person's comfort level first. Before launching into our experiences, we might ask, “How do you feel about discussions around abortion?” This can provide insight into their perspective and help us decide how much to share. If they seem open, we can slowly share more about our journey, highlighting both the challenges and the moments of relief or clarity we experienced.
Finding even one person who truly understands can make a huge difference. I connected with someone who had a similar experience, and we began talking regularly. Being able to share our stories made me feel less alone and helped me articulate my feelings when I eventually spoke with friends and family. Sometimes just having that one supportive person in our corner can give us the courage to open up to others.
How do you approach these conversations? Anyone else finding it tough to explain your experiences to those who might not fully get it? Sharing our stories can bring a little light to the heavier moments — I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
