How do you cope with feelings of guilt or shame after your experience?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have felt that heavy weight of guilt or shame after our abortion experience, and it can be overwhelming. It’s like this cloud that follows us around, filled with so many “what ifs” and “should haves.” We might even feel isolated, thinking that no one else truly understands what we're going through. But the truth is, we’re not alone in this, and connecting with others who have walked a similar path can be incredibly healing. One thing that has helped me is finding a safe space to express my feelings without judgment. Whether it’s through journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or even sharing my story here, letting those emotions out can be really cathartic. It’s important to remember that our experiences are valid, and expressing them can help lighten that load of guilt or shame. I found that having even one person in my life who truly understands this experience made a world of difference. We started meeting up regularly, and it felt so refreshing to share our stories without fear of judgment. Another approach some of us try is reframing our thoughts. It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity, but focusing on the reasons behind our decisions can help shift our perspective. Reminding ourselves that we made the best choice for our circumstances can empower us to move forward. I often reflect on the positive aspects of my life since the experience and how it’s shaped me into who I am today. Sometimes it’s those little reminders that help combat the guilt. Self-compassion is also key. Many of us struggle with being kind to ourselves, especially when we feel we’ve made a difficult choice. Practicing self-compassion can be as simple as allowing ourselves to feel what we feel without shame. It’s okay to acknowledge that we’ve gone through something difficult. Taking time to care for ourselves, whether through meditation, art, or even a walk outside, can be grounding. It’s the connection with others who share similar experiences that often helps us feel less alone. Anyone else dealing with these feelings? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. Would love to hear what’s helped you navigate these emotions.
