Have you ever walked into a job interview and immediately felt the weight of your age? Many of us know that feeling all too well. It’s disheartening when you sense that the interviewer has already made up their mind about you before you even say a word. Ageism can be subtle or overt, but it definitely has a way of shaking our confidence, especially when we know we have so much to offer.
One thing that has helped me cope with ageism during interviews is to focus on my experience and the unique perspective I bring to the table. Instead of downplaying my years in the workforce, I started highlighting how my background equips me to handle challenges with wisdom and creativity. For instance, I’ve found that weaving in specific examples of how I’ve successfully navigated difficult situations in the past can really demonstrate my value. It’s a way of flipping the narrative from “they might think I’m too old” to “look at what I’ve accomplished and how it can benefit you.”
Another approach some of us take is practicing interview scenarios with a friend or someone in our community who understands these challenges. Having someone who gets it not only provides a safe space to refine our skills but also reminds us that we’re not alone in this struggle. I’ve started meeting up with a couple of folks from our group, and sharing our experiences has been such a game-changer. We’ve exchanged tips on how to respond to age-related questions and built each other up in the process.
It can also be helpful to research companies that prioritize diversity in their hiring practices, including age diversity. I’ve learned to ask questions during interviews that gauge a company’s culture around this, like how they support employees of all ages. It’s empowering to know which organizations value our experience, and it can help us feel more confident in our choice of where to apply.
Anyone else facing ageism in interviews? I’d love to hear your experiences and tips — sometimes just talking about it with someone who gets it makes all the difference.
