The holiday season can be a beautiful yet complicated time for many of us in the Zoroastrian community. With cultural expectations often pulling us in one direction and our personal beliefs in another, it’s easy to feel a bit lost. Many of us might struggle with the pressure to conform to traditional celebrations while also wanting to honor our own spiritual practices and beliefs.
One thing that has helped me is finding small ways to integrate my personal beliefs into the cultural celebrations. For instance, during the New Year festivities, I like to incorporate elements of our Zoroastrian teachings into the gathering, perhaps by sharing a prayer that resonates with me. It’s a little gesture, but it opens up space for deeper conversations and connection with family members. Sometimes, having just one person in the family who understands this balance can make a huge difference.
Another approach some of us take is to communicate our needs openly with family. It can be daunting, but expressing how we feel about certain traditions can help ease the tension. For example, if a specific custom feels out of alignment with our beliefs, saying something like, “I’d love to celebrate this in a way that feels more connected to my Zoroastrian values” can open up a dialogue. It’s not always easy, and we might face resistance, but it’s worth it for our peace of mind.
We can also lean on each other during this time. Sharing experiences with fellow Zoroastrians who are navigating the same challenges has been a lifeline for me. One year, I connected with a group of friends who felt similarly, and we created our own small gathering to celebrate our Zoroastrian traditions together. It was refreshing to be in a space where we all understood the nuances of our cultural and spiritual identities.
How do you all handle the holidays? Are there any specific traditions you’ve adapted to feel more aligned with your beliefs? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands can make all the difference.
