Navigating the expectations of family while trying to embrace my Yazidi identity in a modern world

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the struggle of balancing the rich heritage of our Yazidi identity with the expectations of our families in today’s modern world. It can feel like walking a tightrope, trying to honor our traditions while also wanting to carve out our own paths. The pressure can be overwhelming, especially when family members hold on to customs and values that might not resonate with our experiences or beliefs anymore. One thing that helped me navigate this journey was finding ways to communicate openly with my family. I started by sharing my thoughts and feelings about what it means to be Yazidi today. This wasn’t always easy—some conversations ended in frustration. But by expressing my perspective, I found that many family members began to understand my desire for a modern identity that still honors our roots. It’s important to remind ourselves that it’s okay to embrace both; we don’t have to choose one over the other. Another approach that really changed things for me was connecting with others in our community who are grappling with similar challenges. I found a few friends who also feel the pull between tradition and modernity. We began meeting regularly, sharing stories about our experiences and supporting each other as we navigate family expectations. Just having that space to be real with one another lightened the load immensely. Sometimes, simply knowing that we’re not alone in this struggle makes a world of difference. We also might find it helpful to celebrate our culture in ways that feel authentic to us. For instance, I started incorporating Yazidi traditions into my life that resonate with my values, like cooking traditional meals or participating in local Yazidi events that welcome diverse expressions of our identity. This not only honors where we come from but also allows us to share our culture in a way that feels true to who we are today. Navigating family expectations while embracing our Yazidi identity is definitely challenging, but we can take small steps that honor both sides. Anyone else feeling this push and pull? How have you balanced your family’s expectations with your own sense of identity? Sharing our stories can really help us all feel a little less alone.
