How do you navigate the cultural expectations placed on you while trying to establish your own identity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Yazidi community know how tough it can be to navigate the cultural expectations placed on us while trying to carve out our own identities. Balancing our rich heritage with the desire to express who we truly are can feel like walking a tightrope, especially when those around us have strong opinions about how we should live. One thing that really helped me was finding people within our community who share similar experiences. I remember meeting a fellow Yazidi who felt torn between family expectations and personal aspirations. We started talking regularly, and it was such a relief to realize I wasn’t alone in these struggles. Sometimes, just having that one person who gets it can make a world of difference in understanding how to honor our culture while still pursuing our own paths. Another approach some of us try is setting small boundaries with family regarding expectations. For example, if we’re pressured to follow traditional roles that don’t resonate with us, we can gently express our feelings and share our own dreams. It’s not always easy, and it might lead to uncomfortable conversations, but it can also open doors for understanding. We can show that embracing our individuality doesn’t mean rejecting our culture; it means enriching it with our unique perspectives. Also, embracing our Yazidi identity in ways that feel authentic to us can be empowering. Whether it’s through art, music, or sharing stories, expressing who we are can help bridge the gap between tradition and personal identity. I've found that when I engage with my culture on my terms, I feel more connected and confident in my identity. Anyone else navigating these cultural expectations? It can be a challenge, but sometimes just connecting with someone who understands can change everything. What’s your experience been like?
