How do you navigate family expectations about marriage and career as a Vokkaliga?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Vokkaliga community know how heavy family expectations can feel, especially when it comes to marriage and career. It’s like walking a tightrope, trying to balance our own dreams with traditions and values that have been ingrained in us. The pressure can be overwhelming, and sometimes it feels like there’s no way to navigate it without disappointing someone. One thing that helped me was opening up to my family about my aspirations. I shared my career goals openly, explaining how they align with our community's values of hard work and dedication. It wasn’t an easy conversation — many of us know how hard it is to voice our true desires against the backdrop of traditional expectations. But honestly, just having that dialogue made a difference. It allowed them to see my perspective and, over time, led to more understanding and support from my family. Another approach some of us try is finding others in our community who are going through similar struggles. Connecting with friends or family members who understand these pressures can be a game changer. I found a couple of cousins who felt the same way about their career choices. We started meeting regularly to share our thoughts and strategies, and it made the hard days feel a lot lighter. Just knowing we’re not alone in feeling this way is comforting. It's also important to remember that our paths don't have to look the same as those who came before us. Many of us face the challenge of carving out our own identities while respecting our heritage. When we see others in our community successfully pursuing their passions, it can inspire us to do the same. It’s about finding that balance and redefining what success means for us as Vokkaligas. Anyone else navigating these family expectations? It can be tough, but sharing our experiences might help us all feel a little more understood and connected. What’s helped you find your way through these conversations?
