Many of us in the Velama community know how overwhelming it can feel to navigate the expectations and traditions that come with our identity. The weight of cultural heritage can sometimes feel heavy, especially when it clashes with our personal beliefs or modern lifestyles. It’s a balancing act, and many of us are trying to figure out how to honor our roots while also being true to ourselves. One thing that helped me was having open conversations with family about my feelings. I started by sharing how certain traditions make me feel—whether it’s the pressure to attend every function or the expectations around marriage and career choices. I found that many in my family actually appreciated my honesty and opened up about their own struggles with these traditions too. It felt comforting to realize that I wasn’t alone in feeling this way, and sometimes, just knowing that others understand can lighten the load.
