Navigating family expectations while trying to forge my own identity as a Vanniyar

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations while trying to forge our own identity as Vanniyars can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that balancing tradition and personal aspirations isn't easy, especially when family values run deep. There’s often this sense of duty we feel, pulling us toward roles that might not align with our true selves. One thing that helped me was finding a few friends from our community who understand these challenges firsthand. Sharing our stories made me realize I wasn’t alone in feeling this pressure. We started meeting up regularly, discussing everything from family expectations to our dreams. Having that safe space to vent and strategize really eased the burden. It’s comforting to hear someone say, “I get it,” and it has helped me articulate my own desires more clearly when talking to my family. Another approach some of us try is setting small, achievable goals that reflect our identity while still respecting our family’s values. For instance, if you have a passion for art or music but feel pushed towards a more traditional career path, maybe you can find ways to incorporate those interests into your life without completely stepping away from family expectations. It’s about finding that sweet spot where you can express who you are while still honoring where you come from. It can be tough when family members hold onto their beliefs so tightly, sometimes even resisting open conversations about change. Taking small steps, like sharing a personal achievement or a new perspective, has helped many of us make progress. It’s all about planting seeds and giving them time to grow. Anyone else navigating this mix of family expectations and personal identity? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands can change everything. What’s been your experience?
