Does anyone else feel pressure to uphold cultural traditions that don't resonate with them?

Many of us in the Vanniyar community feel the weight of cultural traditions that sometimes feel more like a burden than a blessing. It’s not uncommon to find ourselves caught in the middle, wanting to honor our heritage while also grappling with traditions that don’t resonate with us personally. This can lead to feelings of guilt, frustration, or even isolation.
One thing that really helped me was finding a few friends within our community who are also navigating these pressures. We started having regular conversations about which traditions we feel connected to and which ones feel outdated or just don’t fit us anymore. Sharing our experiences has been a huge relief — it made me realize I'm not alone in feeling conflicted about things like certain festivals or rituals that don’t align with my values or lifestyle. Sometimes, just having one person to talk to about it can change everything.
Another approach that many of us have tried is creating our own versions of traditions. For instance, if a particular festival feels too rigid, we might adapt it to make it more meaningful for ourselves and our families. It could be as simple as celebrating with friends rather than in a large family gathering, or even incorporating elements that reflect our personal beliefs. This way, we can still honor our roots while making it more authentic to who we are today.
It can be tough to balance respect for our culture with the need to be true to ourselves, and the pressure can feel overwhelming at times. Remember, it’s okay to carve out your own path. Anyone else feeling this tension? How do you navigate the expectations of tradition while staying true to yourself? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s helped you through this.
