Navigating cultural disconnection while living in an urban environment

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Living in an urban environment can often feel like being caught in a whirlwind of cultures, yet many of us from Indigenous backgrounds experience an overwhelming sense of disconnection. We might find ourselves surrounded by diversity, yet longing for the familiar customs, languages, and community bonds that define our identities. It’s a complex feeling—like we’re straddling two worlds but not fully belonging to either. One thing that has really helped many of us navigate this cultural disconnection is finding spaces that honor our traditions, even in the city. Many urban centers have cultural events or gatherings that celebrate Indigenous heritage, whether it’s a powwow, art exhibit, or community feast. Attending these events can be a grounding experience, allowing us to reconnect with our roots and meet others who share similar experiences. I remember going to a local powwow and feeling an instant sense of belonging, surrounded by people who understood my journey. Another approach we can take is to actively seek out or create community groups that reflect our experiences. Some of us have started small meet-ups or online chats where we can share our stories, struggles, and triumphs. Having even one person in your life who truly understands the unique challenges of being urban Indigenous can make a world of difference. I found someone in my area with similar experiences, and we began meeting regularly to discuss everything from cultural practices to navigating the complexities of urban life. It has been a game-changer for me. It’s also important to acknowledge the feelings of isolation that can creep in. Many of us can relate to feeling disconnected from our cultural practices and language, which can lead to a sense of loss or frustration. When those feelings bubble up, it can be helpful to remind ourselves that it's okay to seek support. Sharing these feelings with others who understand can lighten the load, even if it’s just through a text or a quick coffee catch-up. Anyone else feeling this disconnection while living in the city? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you!
