How do you deal with the stigma from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Two-Spirit community know too well the weight of stigma — not just from the broader society but also from within our own Indigenous communities. It can feel isolating and overwhelming when we’re navigating rejection or misunderstanding from both sides. One thing that has helped me is finding and connecting with others who share similar experiences. When I started talking with other Two-Spirit folks, I realized I wasn’t alone in feeling that push and pull between different worlds. Sharing our stories, struggles, and triumphs can be a powerful way to validate our identities. Even if it’s just a casual chat or joining a small gathering, having that support helps us feel less isolated and more understood. Another approach some of us try is educating those around us, whether it's family members, friends, or even community leaders. It can be tough to confront someone who doesn't understand our identity, but sometimes a simple conversation can break down barriers. Sharing resources or explaining what it means to be Two-Spirit can open doors for empathy and reduce stigma. This isn’t always easy, but seeing someone shift their perspective can make all the effort worthwhile. We also need to remember to take care of ourselves amidst this emotional labor. Creating personal rituals or spaces where we can be unapologetically ourselves helps foster resilience. Whether it’s spending time in nature, participating in cultural practices, or engaging in art, these activities remind us of our strength and beauty as Two-Spirit individuals. Anyone else feeling the weight of stigma from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — I’d love to hear what’s helped you through.
