The struggle of balancing my adoptive culture and my birth culture — does anyone else feel pulled in two directions?

Many of us know what it feels like to be pulled in two different directions by our adoptive culture and our birth culture. It can be such a complex and isolating experience. On one hand, we want to embrace the traditions and values of our adoptive families, but on the other hand, there’s a deep longing to connect with the culture we were born into. This tug-of-war can leave us feeling lost at times, and it’s okay to acknowledge that struggle.
One thing that has helped me is making an effort to learn more about my birth culture. I started small by reading books, listening to music, or trying out recipes from that culture. It’s a way to explore my identity without feeling overwhelming pressure. The more I learn, the more connected I feel, even if it's just a little at a time. Sharing these experiences with others who understand has been incredibly validating. Finding someone who also navigates this duality helped me feel less alone. We meet up to share our stories and celebrate our backgrounds, which has made a real difference.
Another approach some of us try is incorporating aspects of both cultures into our daily lives. Maybe it’s as simple as celebrating holidays from both sides or mixing traditions in a way that feels authentic to us. This blending can create a unique identity that honors our entire experience. I remember one holiday where I combined a dish from my birth culture with a dish my adoptive family loves — it sparked some amazing conversations and brought both sides together.
Navigating the expectations from both cultures can be challenging, too. Sometimes, it feels like there are unspoken rules about how we should behave or what we should prioritize. It’s helpful to talk about these feelings with someone who gets it. Just being able to voice our worries about balancing these cultures can lift some of that weight. Connecting with others who understand this duality has been a huge relief for me.
Anyone else dealing with this? It would be great to hear your stories and what’s helped you find balance in this journey. Sometimes just sharing our experiences makes the struggle feel a little easier.
