Navigating cultural identity when living outside the Torres Strait — how do you stay connected?

Living outside the Torres Strait can often feel like a balancing act. Many of us know that tugging feeling when we're away from our islands, surrounded by a world that doesn't quite understand our culture. It can be isolating, and sometimes we might feel like we’re drifting away from our roots. But there are ways we can hold onto that connection, even from afar.
One thing that has really helped me is finding ways to celebrate our culture, even in small ways. Cooking traditional dishes or sharing island stories with friends can bring a little piece of home to wherever we are. I’ve started a little cooking night with a few other Torres Strait Islanders I met online. We each make a dish from home and share our memories associated with it. It’s amazing how those conversations can spark a sense of belonging, making us feel closer to our culture and each other.
Another approach some of us find helpful is connecting through social media or online groups dedicated to Torres Strait culture. It can be comforting to see posts about our islands, share news, or hear about community events. I came across a group where we share music, art, and even language tips. Just knowing that there are others out there who share our experiences and pride in our identity can be a real balm for those days when we feel disconnected.
And if you’re in a place where you can, attending cultural events or festivals can also help bridge that gap. I remember the first time I went to a Torres Strait celebration in a city far from home. It felt like a burst of color and familiar sounds, reminding me of who I am. Even if it’s just a small gathering with a few friends, being part of a community, no matter how small, can ground us.
Navigating cultural identity while living away from the Torres Strait isn’t always easy, but by creating our own spaces to share and connect, we can keep our culture alive. Anyone else feeling the pull of home? What are some ways you stay connected to your heritage? I’d love to hear your stories!
