How do you connect with your Torres Strait Islander heritage while living away from home?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of being away from home and grappling with our Torres Strait Islander heritage. It can be tough when the distance makes us feel disconnected from our culture and community. But there are ways to bridge that gap and keep our heritage alive, even when we're far from the islands. One thing that has really helped me is creating a space at home that reflects my culture. Whether it’s displaying traditional art, decorating with colors that remind me of the sea, or incorporating elements of our stories and songs, these little touches can make a huge difference. It’s like having a piece of home with me, reminding me of who I am and where I come from. Another approach that some of us find meaningful is connecting with other Torres Strait Islanders, even if it's online. Finding a group or even just one person who shares this heritage can be so powerful. I met someone through an online group, and we started sharing our experiences, our favorite recipes, and even our family stories. It’s comforting to have someone who understands the unique challenges of living away from home but still cherishes our culture as much as we do. Engaging with our language can also be a significant way to stay connected. Many of us might find ourselves looking up traditional words or phrases, or even learning the language if we have the opportunity. Listening to songs in our language or watching films that reflect our stories can bring a sense of belonging, reminding us of the beauty of our identity. Sometimes, it can feel isolating, especially during significant cultural events when you can’t be physically present with family. But even sending a message to family back home during these times can help us feel part of those celebrations. Sharing photos or videos of what we’re doing here can create a sense of connection across the miles. So, how are you keeping your Torres Strait Islander heritage alive while living away from home? It would be great to hear your stories and what has worked for you! Anyone else feeling this longing but finding ways to stay connected?
